Addiction or substance abuse can affect anyone, and it is important for not only the addict to understand, but also the family, friends, community and medical field as well. Millions of people suffer from addiction, from drinking, use of prescription drugs non-medically, substance abuse of illicit and over-the-counter medications. According to SAMHSA 's National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 22.5 million people (8.5 percent of the U.S. population) aged 12 or older needed treatment for an illicit drug or alcohol problem in 2014. (National Institute on Drug Abuse, 2016). It can affect a person negatively, losing a job, family, going to jail, having medical consequences and even being homeless. We can fight the problem of addiction and drug abuse, but steps toward this are education, prevention and awareness to stop the negative connotations and stigmas attached. Elements of addiction derived from a literature search covered 52 studies included (a) engagement in the behavior to achieve appetitive effective, (b) preoccupation with the behavior, (c) temporary satiation, (d) loss of control and (e) suffering negative consequences. Over the last 400 years, some statements made about addiction began to frame it as involving high, overpowering urges and, over the 200 years this word has become more and more disease-like in connotation.
