“Backing me up into the corner until I was whimpering and crying, he would just laugh at me and walk away, satisfied by my distress. He would start picking on me for little things or nothing. My mom’s new boyfriend, was mentally and physically abusive towards me.” (source) This is the story of Fiona, a 9 year old girl who is a victim and survivor of child abuse. Fiona is just one of the many children that have been subjected to abuse. According to a 2014 survey done by Children’s Bureau, in the United States, an estimated 702,000 children have suffered from maltreatment, and those are only the cases that have been reported.
Child abuse is a serious problem. Children are suffering from something that leaves a scar in their minds forever, and only we as adults have the power to stop this.
So what is child abuse? The United States federal Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act defines child abuse and neglect as, at minimum, "any recent act or failure to act on the part of a parent or caretaker which results in death, serious physical or emotional harm, sexual abuse or exploitation" and/or "an act or failure to act which presents an imminent risk of serious harm". It is distributed into four categories which include neglect, physical abuse, sexual abuse, exploitation and emotional abuse.
