When we think of children, we think of vulnerable and innocent human beings. When the trust between the child and an authority figure is infringed, the results can be disastrous and even traumatic to the child. In the U.S., the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) define child maltreatment as any act or series of acts of commands or omissions by a parent or other caregiver that results in harm, potential for harm, or threat of harm to a child. Child abuse is not rare; in 2012, U.S. state and local child protective services (CPS) received an estimated 3.4 million referrals of children being abused or neglected. Furthermore, health professionals believe that nearly one percent of all American children are subjected to abuse or neglect each year. There are four types of child abuse: neglect, physical abuse, emotional abuse, and sexual abuse . Many people think child abuse occurs in those four types when in reality the crime actually has several types of mistreatment. One of these is child labor, which is often defined as work that deprives children of their youth, their potential and their dignity, and that is harmful to physical and mental development. Child abuse is not only prevalent in the U.S.; there are some Western countries that practice different forms of child physical abuse. Child abuse has happened all over the world to young children, but many of these things are kept hidden, because children are too scared to speak on the abuse to a grown up.
