Drug and alcohol abuse has been an ongoing issue for individuals and is considered a social problem in our world today. Drug abuse is considered a social problem because although it affects the abuser in many negative ways it also flows out into society. Stimulants, Depressants and hallucinogens are types of drugs that come in different forms, such as, cocaine, tobacco, alcohol, marijuana, and LSD. Furthermore, each form can have different methods of use, immediate effects and potential long term effects. The National Institute on Drug Abuse discusses the costs and affects that drug abuse places on not only the abuser but society. According to this article, drug abuse is a major public health problem. Health care expenditures, lost earnings and costs associated with crime and accidents costs all related to substance abuse cost the nation more than $484 billion per year. Compared to other chronic conditions such as diabetes and cancer costs, the cost of drug abuse is surprisingly more. Moreover, many medical problems can be directly linked to drug abuse. Cancer, heart disease and HIV/AIDS can all be related to drug abuse. According to the NIDA, in 2002 approximately half of the pediatric AIDS cases which was 4,700, resulted from injection drug use or sex with injection drug users by the child’s mother. Although HIV/AIDs was a major epidemic in the 80’s and we are now educated on the disease and risks; it is still a social problem tied to drug abuse. Many of our other…
