The drug abuse has been an ongoing problem in the United States. Based on findings from the 2009 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NDUH), it has been estimated that more than 8.3 million children have been exposed to parental substance abuse in their living situation (SAMHSA, 2009). This will become a problem when these children become adults. It could affect behavioral patterns, which could lead to criminal behavioral and a safety concern to the community. Some of the drugs are associated with mental health problems, delinquency, aggressiveness and substance abuse. Other exposers of dangerous chemicals were methamphetamine labs. It creates an unhealthy environment and safety concern for law enforcement and communities were these labs are formed. This type of exposers to dangerous drugs during pregnancy creates future issues with drug abuse. If the problem is not treated immediately, individuals will make decision to commit crimes to support their habits of drug use.

In the US, there are allot individuals committing crimes such as the sale and use of narcotics, robberies, burglaries, larcenies, shootings, domestic violence, child abuse and assaults. During the 1970’s and 1980’s, policies related to the “War on Drugs” contributed to a significant increase in the prison population (Abramsky, 2007).
