In the past three decades there has been an increase in the number of people who suffer from eating disorders like anorexia nervosa, and bulimia nervosa (Comer, 2015). Binge eating disorder is another common eating disorder, although unlike the previous disorders mentioned, binge eating disorder is not centered around a fear of weight gain, (Comer, 2015). Eating disorders, especially bulimia nervosa and anorexia nervosa, are substantially more likely to affect women, and around 95% of people who suffer from one of these disorders are female, (Comer, 2015). With a rise in the number of eating disorders I think it’s important to understand what they are, issues that exacerbate the disorder, and how they can be treated. Anorexia nervosa is an eating disorder characterized by an irrational fear of food as well as extreme, life-threatening weight loss, (Bulimia.com, (2015). Patients who suffer from anorexia nervosa typically self-starve, and while this might not mean avoiding food completely, their intake is typically restricted and the patient might obsess over calories. The patient might constantly work out to burn calories, or even rely on laxatives or other methods of purging in order to try and lose weight, (Bulimia.com, 2015). Some physical signs of anorexia nervosa, besides the sufferer being underweight, could be thinning hair, yellowing skin and brittle nails (Bulimia.com, 2015).
