Like Paul McCartney, many people today are switching to a vegetarian or even vegan diet and with good reason. Environmentalists and scientists have shown, through extensive research, that meat industries are over-producing animal products, and in addition, are a major cause of environmental problems such as global warming and world hunger. Another good motive is the unimaginable cruelty these animals suffer, that represents torture one could never imagine for their own pets or peers. In fact, the meat in farmed animals and fish costs so much to maintain, it would be too expensive to produce enough to feed the hungry. However, if these farms were eliminated completely, there would be enough money to grow the right amount of vegetables and grains to feed every human in the world. Thus, switching to a vegan diet is not only good for the animals but also aids environmental and world issues. In addition to being a hazard to our environment, including animal products in our diets is promoting cruelty to animals. The animals that are used every day for food are often not cared for properly. They are raised and slaughtered in a way that many would not consider civilized. Investigations into these farms and slaughterhouses have proven that the living conditions and diets, including supplements and hormones, the animals endure are extremely harmful to the animal. Supposedly butchered so that the animals do not feel any pain, but it is often done carelessly and improperly so that the animals suffer more than necessary. There are also many free-range and local community farms which practice better methods for raising the animals but they still can rarely be considered cruelty-free. The animals are often sent to the same slaughterhouses as factory farmed animals and treated with the same cruelty.
