The purpose of this essay is to provide a reflection on my experience throughout the course of mentorship program with a virtual student (Chris) under the requirements of the University and in conjunction with the Hospital’s policies and procedures. This essay will focus on the domains identified under the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC 2015) as Prioritise people, Practise effectively, Preserve safety and Promote professionalism and trust.

The education of nursing students takes place at multiple learning environments. In the United Kingdom, 50% of the time will be at a higher education institution (HEI) and the other 50% will be spent in clinical practice, known as clinical placement (Foster, Ooms & Marks-Maran 2015). During the clinical placements theory and practice should be integrated in the learning-centered practice. As a mentor, the registered nurse has a key role to play in supporting learning in the practice environment (Pellatt G. C. 2006). The Nursing and Midwifery Council Code (2015) in Section 23 states that registered nurses must facilitate students and others to develop their competence and in Section 31 states that registered nurses must make sure that everyone they are responsible for is supervised and supported.

When I heard that I was participating in a mentoring course and would be mentoring a student, I realised it could be a real challenge for me. Although I have some experience mentoring students in the past, to be honest this is my first time…
