One of the saddest parts of hunger in the United States is child hunger. According to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), 15.9 million children under 18 in the United States live in households where they are unable to consistently access enough nutritious food necessary for a healthy life. Even though hunger isn’t good for any individual, it can be really be destructive for children due to their helplessness and the potential for long-term consequences. According to Feeding America, in 2011, the top five states with the highest rate of hunger with children under 18 are New Mexico, the District of Columbia, Arizona, Oregon, and Georgia. This seems to be unreal that the capital of the United States is one of the places in the US that has the hungriest children.
The government gives assistance to the less fortunate; especially those with children, with programs like SNAP Food Stamps and WIC (Women Infants and Children) but these programs don’t reach everyone. SNAP offers nutrition assistance to millions of eligible, low-income individuals and families and provides economic benefits to communities. SNAP is the largest program in the domestic hunger safety net. The Food and Nutrition Service works with State agencies, nutrition educators, and neighborhood and faith-based organizations to ensure that those eligible for nutrition assistance can make informed decisions about applying for the program and can access benefits.
