In the United States individuals die every day due to heroin overdose. Heroin can be practically found anywhere nowadays, and the use and effects of it can cause serious consequence to a person’s health. Heroin is derived from morphine alkaloid which is found in opium and is approximately 2-3 times more potent (Drugs.com, 2015). Heroin in many cases is a white powdery substance. In other cases is has been seen as a black sticky substance known as “black tar heroin.” (National Institute on Drug Abuse, 2015). In addition, most heroin is mixed with other drugs or substances such as sugar or powder milk. It is also sometimes mixed with other poisons (Drugs.com, 2015). However, many users do not know the strength of the drug and therefore, risk overdosing or even death (Drugs.com, 2015). In Massachusetts, 11 deaths due to overdoses have occurred. This is a cause of the increase of heroin use (Donnis, & Telegram & G.S., 1998). Under the Controlled Substance Act of 1970, heroin has been classified as a Schedule I drug. This is due to heroin having no acceptable medical use in the United States (Drugs.com, 2015). According to the National Institute of Drug Abuse, in 2011, 4.2 million American from the age of 12 and older had tried heroin once in their lives (National Institute on Drug Abuse, 2015). Furthermore approximately 23 percent of the individuals who have tried it become dependent. With this being said not everyone who experiments heroin or any other illicit drug will develop…
