According to “Leadership roles and Management Functions in Nursing” written by Bessie Marquis and Carol Huston, management is defined as the process of leading and directing an organization through the arrangement and handling of resources. Roles such as managing, handling, supervision, and control fall appropriately under the description of management. The term manager and leader are often used interchangeably, but there are differences between the roles of these two. Leaders do not have delegated authority, while managers have a source of power due to the ability to delegate. Managers hold duties and responsibilities to carry out specific functions. They also have a greater responsibility and accountability than leaders.
I am currently working as a Patient Care Technician (PCT) on the float pool department at Saddleback Memorial Hospital. During one of my shift, I was given the privilege of interviewing Angela Weyer, the operations manager on the Medical Oncology Unit. Angela has been working in this position for this unit for about a year now. She started off as a PCT and worked her way up the ladder to get to the position she is in now. She worked as a PCT for two years, and obtained her RN license. Angela then worked on the floor for four years while earning her master’s degree.
