Media’s Effect On Eating Disorders
Symbolic Interactionism is a theory focusing on the approach that has evolved from social behaviorism and that stresses the symbolic nature of human interaction (p. 46). In society, there are norms and expectations that people are expected to follow and live by and trying to achieve this ideal self-image, people sometime behave in a self-destructing behavior. Because the media creates an image that we are suppose to fit, people will go to the extreme measures to meet this look even if it involves developing an eating disorder (DeGroat). Beside these ads are comments posted regarding the amazing and fantastic appearance of these women. It is photographs such as these that give women the impression that unless they are 5’8 and weigh 100 pounds they are somehow fat and ugly. Models are a great example because they are encouraged to stay at an unhealthy weight. When a designer has new clothes sewn, there is as little material as possible used until after a showing of the new designs. The models wearing these clothes need to be a small size in order to fit into them. The other reason is that the camera is notorious for adding pounds. When the models go on photo shoots, it’s important that they look “thin and sexy” (Eating Disorders). An example of a celebrity having an eating disorder is Singer Karen Carpenter, who was struggling with anorexia and bulimia and after she went to treatment for years, everyone thought that she had recovered and was doing better. After that, she was found dead on the bathroom floor in her parent's home. She had a heart attack and it was said that the result of her death was because she had abused the drug Ipecac for years. Ipecac is a liquid that is used to induce vomiting, and it is often abused by anorexics and bulimics (Cemanovic).
