Peculiar path

In one of the coldest days of winter, I opened my eyes to this mysterious world in a private hospital located in the most entertaining city, Tehran. Since that day, my dreams and aspirations have been shaped in an odd manner in a conflict of values. I grew up in Iran in a traditional Persian family that was also influenced by western values. We were living in the middle of an Islamic Republic with a fundamentalist Islamic ideology that conflicted with my family values. “Our Family values are fundamental principles, they solidify the foundation for a strong, tight-knit family,” my uncle always says, to remind us the importance of the family values. I did not care about this news so much, however, as I was busy preparing and worrying about my English exam.

The next day, soon after I finished my English final, I found a way to escape my hard math exam. Our school principal announced that our school was trying to get some donations, and a few volunteers who would be taken to Bam to hand out relief supplies to the injured people. The departure date for the volunteers was at the beginning of the following week of my English final. Since the trip was planned for four days, I realized I could escape my math test by volunteering to help the people of Bam. I successfully convinced my parents to let me go. I began my Bam journey with a feeling of relief from the anxiety caused by my math exam.

Before going to Bam, my main focus was getting good grades and the satisfaction that comes from getting them. Going to Bam changed that. It was a revolution for a boy who had spent the past eleven years in his own world. Seeing the injured people of Bam suffering, who had lost their entire families and did not know where to go or where to start was not easy. I saw people under the rubble, and people killed. I saw people everywhere hugging and crying. The sight of a little girl mourning at her father’s grave brought tears to my eyes. These scenes were
