Mary Elizabeth Dallas wrote an article in CBC news about drug, alcohol and tobacco use by teens, with the articles statistics coming from the United States Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. According to a federal report released on September 16, 2014, “illegal drug use among teens in the United States is on the decline,” as well as alcohol, and the use of tobacco products of people between the age of 12 and 17 have also dropped between the years 2002 and 2013. Even though the report shows a decline in many drug, alcohol and tobacco usage, there are still many people in the United States who need to seek help and get treatment for the abuse problems. In the report from 2013, “almost 23 million Americans needed treatment for their drug and abuse problem, but only 2.5 million received help from a facility for helping people with substance abuse problems.” The annual survey performed by the United States Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration of 70,000 people between the ages of 12 and older in the United States showed that substance dependence or abuse problems dropped from 8.9 percent to 5.2 percent. The drug use of young people was declining, as well as alcohol and tobacco use.
