Substance abuse affects people of all ages, sexes, and ethnic groups. Physical and psychological dependence on a substance are a chronic disorder. Relapses are not to be seen as failures but as indication to intensity treatment. In 2010 the Office of Applied Studies of the U.S Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration conducted a survey indicating that some 22.6 million of Americans 12 years of age or older were current illicit drug users that are they reported using an illicit drug during the month pitot to the survey interview.
People experiment with drugs for many different reasons. Many first try drugs out of curiosity, to have a good time, because friends are doing it, or in an effort to improve athletic performance or ease another problem, such as stress, anxiety, or depression. Commonly abuse substances are major categories opioids, stimulants, and depressants. Individual drugs are alcohol, anabolic steroids, dextromethorphan, lysergic and diethylamide, marijuana, methamphetamine, methylenedioxymethamphetamine, nicotine, and phencyclidine. Stimulant: The abuse of stimulants is related to their ability to cause elevation of mood, reduction of fatigue, a sense of increased alertness, and invigorating aggressiveness.
