Throughout the United States there is a popularity of substance abuse among several age groups. Now what does it mean by abusing substances? By definition, substance abuse is the excessive use of addictive substances for example- drugs, nicotine or alcohol without medical justification. The issue of substance abuse is getting prevalent all over the community. Alcohol, over-dosed medications, narcotic, illegal drugs, over-the-counter are both abused among teens, young adults and mid-aged adults in the community. Even though many of these people see substance abuse as a personal lifestyle preference, the penalties that occur by the misuse of drugs and alcohol are severe. The concerns leave both social and economic impact on individuals’ lives. According to National Institute on Drug Abuse alcohol, cocaine, Nicotine, Heroine, Marijuana, steroids and even Prescription medication are most commonly abused substances. Alcohol, even though is legal over certain age, can cause memory loss, liver and brain damage, cancer and heart disease if consume excessively. Cocaine damages nose and sinuses which affect lung and respiratory system. Nicotine which found in cigarettes is the most popular addictive substances among people. It is responsible for vast majority of nicotine related side effects for example irregular heartbeat, indigestion, coughing, runny nose etc. Steroids are drugs which are mostly used by athletes and bodybuilders.
