Why do people take substances?

People abuse substances for many different reasons. Some people take substances because of

peer pressure and think that they might be immune, others do it because they are stressed and

need something to keep them away from their problems. Some people, specially teenagers take

them just for a thrill or curiosity. The truth is, for whatever the reason people start taking

substances, the outcome will be that the user will end up with a substance related disorder.

This conditions involves problems caused by alcohol, cocaine, tobacco, and

other drugs among them. Substance-related disorders are common and cause medical, social,

and psychological problems among users and those around them. Some of the medical

problems are anxiety, mood disorders, mental disorders such as schizophrenia and personality

disorders. Some of the social implications due to substance abuse are, avoiding family and

friends, lying, giving up activities they used to enjoy such as sports and spending time with non

-using friends and getting in trouble with the law. Also, the user may come across with

psychological problems that vary from having a maladaptive pattern of thoughts, mixed feelings

and behaviors that can cause serious detriments to relationships.
