The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation works with other organizations as an extension to the world to in four program areas. In each area there is a focus on an issue mainly dealing with health, education or poverty. Their Global Development Division works to provide assistance to the world’s poor. The goal is to focus on decreasing hunger and poverty. The second area is the Global Health Division. Its goal is to create and maintain lifesaving science and technology in underserved countries. The third area is the United States Division. The U.S. Division focuses on improving American high school and postsecondary education resources, where the foundations headquarters is located, in Washington State. Last, their Global Policy & Advocacy Division builds relationships and policies strategically that will assist the foundation in being successful in their work. The foundation awards grants in each of the four listed areas. While I didn’t see a set mission and set of values the Gates Foundation is “guided by the belief that every life has equal value, and works to help all people lead healthy, productive lives. In developing countries, it focuses on improving people’s health and giving them the chance to lift themselves out of hunger and extreme poverty. In the United States, it seeks to ensure that all people—especially those with the fewest resources—have access to the opportunities they need to succeed in school and life” (Gates, 1999).
