Some may argue that computers, video games and iPhones are harmful to students because it is eating away at their attention spans. Others may argue that technology is helpful because it allows for 24 hour access to the classroom. At the end of the day, technology is a tool. It only provides teachers with a more modern teaching method for students. In other words, you can productively use a screwdriver to tighten up some screws, or you can attempt to hit a nail into a piece of wood with it. In one situation the screwdriver is applied effectively making the task simple. In the other, it is not used correctly and the task becomes difficult, causing the intended results to not be achieved. This is important to realize because it might help teachers make a more careful decision on whether the technology is really necessary in the classroom at a given time. Is technology being used to aid students in learning, or is it really being used more for the reason of convenience?
There are a number of people who believe merging technology and classrooms is a bad idea. Author, Matt Richtel, in his article, “Technology Changing How Students Learn, Teachers Say,” published in the New York Times on November 1, 2012, addresses the topic of technology affecting the youth in their learning and argues that the overuse of technology by children is hindering their ability to focus in the classroom.
