Grove City, Ohio has a population of 37,208 people. According to the FBI statistics, in 2013, Grove City reported 40 violent crimes and 1,270 property crimes. Violent crimes are defined in the Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Program as those offenses which involve force or threat of force. Property crime includes the offenses of burglary, larceny-theft, motor vehicle theft, and arson. The object of the theft-type offenses is the taking of money or property, but there is no force or threat of force against the victims. However, a problem not talked about commonly for Grove City is the war against drugs and more specifically meth.
Methamphetamine or also known by its street name Crystal Meth, has become a huge problem in Grove City. Meth has started to spread to suburbs outside of inner cities. Middle class suburban families are turning to meth because it is a cheaper alternative to prescription drugs. The abuse of meth needs to receive more media attention. Meth has become a disease that has reached pandemic levels. This physical manifestation of death does nothing but destroy people’s lives. It has many correlations and studies done that prove its disastrous effects.
One study done shows a strong correlation between increased meth usage and an increase in property crime. Meth addicts are responsible for 50-70% of all property crimes (Herron, 2012).
