In the article, “What Do Adolescents Need for Healthy Development? Implications for Youth Policy”, Jodie Roth and Jeanne Brooks-Gunn break down the social policy into fourth main ideas. First, Roth and Brooks-Gunn explain that a healthy development for an adolescent is summarized into the “five C’s”: competence being the ability to complete something successfully in the academic, social and vocational field, confidence in an adolescent, connection or healthy relationships with individuals around an adolescent, character from their morals and caring or compassion towards themselves and the individuals around them. Secondly, what challenges occur in the adolescent life and how does an adolescent negotiate that transition? Each challenge brought onto an adolescent has the possibility of it being positive or negative. That particular challenge, coming from their environment, can represent their transition from a child into an adolescent or a young adult but makes it all overwhelming and stressful for some. Third, peers, family, friends, school, work and the community effect their development in a positive and negative view. According to the article, in a negative result, adolescents who do not eat dinner with a parent five or more days a week are in higher risk of substance abuse, confrontations and early sexual activity.
