In this presentation, drug usage, specifically marijuana, will be analyzed from three different, peer-reviewed empirical research articles. All three studies measured the same variable (marijuana usage) through different means. Marijuana is the most commonly abused illicit substance that impairs memory, inhibits judgement, coordination, as well as various physiological symptoms (National Institute On Drug Abuse).

In this study, the researchers are measuring the significance of marijuana availability, purchasing, and usage within a friendship. They utilized in-depth interviews from participants who were marijuana users. According to Belackova and Vaccaro, researchers found that “friendship” between marijuana users had three meanings:
Meanings that individuals attach to friendship as they pertain to the relations among individuals within [marijuana] user groups,
Meanings that individuals attach to friendship as they pertain to the relationship between users and the “middlemen,”
Individual’s meanings of friendship they pertain to the relationship between [marijuana] users and dealers (2013).

“The terms used came up proportionally with frequency of actions taken by respondents on the marijuana market (as shown in Table 3). It also became clear that the meanings that interviewees attributed to friendship varied with the differing patterns of social and market networks that they were asked to describe” (Belackova & Vaccaro, 2015).
