Dialectical Behavior Therapy Group for Eating Disorders Every year, 30 million people in the United States of America suffer from an eating disorder (National Eating Disorder Association, 2014). Due to the complex nature of the disease, eating disorders are notoriously difficult to treat. New research suggests that DBT could provide qualities that other therapies lack. This paper will explore the diagnoses of various eating disorders, components of DBT, and the function of a DBT group in the treatment of eating disorders. Professionals in the field of eating disorders began exploring DBT, which was not previously used for eating disorders, and may have discovered an effective alternative.

Bulimia Nervosa Even though anorexia is the most lethal of the eating disorders, bulimia remains quite fatal. In contrast to anorexia, individuals suffering from bulimia have periods of consuming large amounts of food followed by purging through vomiting, exercise, diet pills, or other means. The DSM-5 bases a diagnosis of bulimia off the following criteria: binge eating with compensation, binging with purging that happens at least once a week for three months, body shape and weight that influences self-image, and these behaviors do not occur with the behaviors of anorexia weight (American Psychiatric Association, 2013). A guide provided in the DSM-5 can also measure the level of severity for bulimia.
Binge Eating Disorder With the release of the DSM-5, binge eating disorder has been added as its own category. Previously, binge eating disorder was classified into the category of eating disorders not otherwise specified. The obesity in America indicates that there may be a large percentage of individuals suffering from binge eating disorder.
