Drug Abuse in Nigeria

Today, you only have to switch on your television, radio or open a newspaper or magazine to be aware that the structure of our society is being contaminated by the growing evil plague of drug abuse. Drug abuse, is one of the major problems in the Nigerian society. Actually, almost every country faces such problem today. A lot of measures are taken to struggle against drug abuse, and, definitely, some changes for the better are evident. However, this problem is not eliminated and perhaps, will never be completely stopped. The repetitive death of drug users today has become an everyday event, that most of us had used it. The term drug abuse most often refers to the use of a drug with such frequency that it causes physical or mental harm to the user. Although the term seems to imply that people abuse the drug they take but rather it is themselves they abuse by using drugs. In an article I read on the internet titled, “Adolescent Drug Abuse.” it was stated that “Nigerians participate heavily in international drug trafficking. One study found that 65 percent of the heroin seized in British airports came from Nigeria. Another study conducted by Joseph Nowinski in his book “Substance Abuse in Adolescents and Young Adults,” he pointed out that 20 percent of the hard drug cases in Britain involved ships of the Nigerian National Shipping Line. By the late 1980s, Nigerians were arrested almost daily in foreign countries, and hundreds languished in foreign jails for drug trafficking. . Addiction to drugs is the condition of being habitually or compulsively occupied with or involved in something. Some characteristics that indicate a person is addicted to drugs include the following. The user continues to use the drug for an extended period of time. The user finds it difficult to stop using the drug. Drug addicts may drop out of school, steal, go to jail, lose their jobs, or leave their families in order to keep using these drugs.
