Eating Disorders: Affects and Prevention by Media Our society today is heavily influenced by the media and the imagery it shows. Though it may be indirect, the media provides unhealthy messages about ideal body sizes, gender attractiveness, and weight control that make women view themselves in a negative way. Magazines, television, and movies influence teenage girls on what they believe their body image should be. The images they show set the standard of what is considered physically attractive in our society. With the use of photoshop, media depicts falsified images of models and actresses to create a perfected look that is unattainable by the average woman. Attractive actors and actresses almost always bring in more viewers and a higher rating, which means more money. Commercials, ads, and billboards advertise beauty products with “satisfaction guaranteed”, convincing people to buy it. The majority of people fall for these advertisements because they show only the most attractive models using the product. Therefore, the media makes a large amount of money from these advertisements by showing our population how we can make a better version of ourselves. They give tips for weight management, including dieting pills, plans, and weight loss programs, promising that it will make us happier and provide a better life. While losing weight is a good way to achieve a healthier lifestyle, the media shows the main advantage of losing weight as being thin. This teaches kids from a young age how important it is to be thin and can inadvertently promote an unhealthy lifestyle. Although the media has tremendous success with making money, they lack in positive contributions to our society, including the self esteem of it’s people. The use of thin models and actresses influence girls body perception, especially teenage girls. Teenagers spend a large amount of their time watching television and movies.
