Protecting Students at Universities Essay

When people are at school, they automatically think they are in a safe environment and nothing bad will happen to them. Many students and teachers do not think too much about school being an unsafe place, but people began to change their minds after many horrific school shootings took place in the United States. On April 16, 2007, Seung Hui Cho, a mentally unstable student that attended Virginia Polytechnic Institute, shot and murdered 32 fellow students and faculty members, wounded 17 more, before committing suicide. This tragic event had horrified people around the world and is considered one of the most horrific mass shootings in all of United States history. Administrators at Virginia Tech demanded Cho to visit a mental heath care professional to get the help he needed. When news got out, it started quite a stir about student privacy laws and people began to be in favor of opposing or even amending the laws concerning student and faculty safety. It is clear from the massacre at Virginia Tech that student privacy laws did more harm then good. When students go to college it is usually the first time they are on their own and making their own decisions. Students sometimes do not know how to react with so much freedom and are use to their parents helping or telling them what to do. Students like Cho who show signs of mental illness, sometimes choose not to get the help they need when they are at college because they think their peers or family will judge them. However, Cho is not the only one, a survey posted in the Chronicle of Higher Education suggests, that nearly a third of college students have had mental health issues and 68% of the students they interviewed claimed they have not received counseling in fear of students making fun of them (Sieben). This needs to open the eyes to colleges and college officials need to provide a safe and caring atmosphere for their students.
