Everyday people are cutting down on the good aspects of life that are needed to sustain a healthy life style, in order to achieve the goals of their busy life schedule. The biggest component of one’s life that does not receive the full attention it deserves is sleep. Society, as a global scaled group, is guilty of minimizing the amount of sleep that one needs to achieve per night. Instead of actually taking the time to sleep and allow for the brain to rest, people replace sleep with other activities and methods to keep up, such as yoga and caffeine; but these activities are not able sustain and rejuvenate the brain like sleep does. This means that they are missing ten hours of sleep each week. In the end, the hours of sleep being missed continuously adds up, not allowing for the brain recuperate in ways it should and it affects the functionality of the brain, such as memorization. An amount of sleep a person achieves is determined on the amount of stress and pressure work or school puts on them. People believe that by ignoring sleep and completing the task at hand, success will be achieved. What most people fail to realize is that the amount of hours and effort put into a task, such as studying, is important but, sleeping and allowing for the brain to rest is just as important as studying. In a student’s schedule, the correct balance of sleep, studying and activities has been proven to be the key of success. (Curico, Ferrara, & Gennaro, 2006) A correlation was made that students in a higher education, such as university, gets less amounts of sleep. Many people think it’s beneficial to complete the work load or study for a test rather than sleep, but what they fail to understand is the connections that are being made when sleeping. When asleep, the material being studied is permanently being encoded into the brain’s memory. Sleep has the ability to transfer new memories into the hippocampus, the part of the brain responsible for short-term memory, and be able to revive old decay memories from the neocortex (Rasch, Born, 2013).
