Children who eat large amounts of processed foods before the age of three may even have a negative effect on their IQ (Mckillip). Many processed foods also contain genetically modified organisms, or GMOs. A genetically modified organism is a plant or animal that is created using biotechnology or genetic engineering. GMOs are not found in nature but instead altered. GMOs have been linked with many health issues. By studying animals, scientist have seen that GMOs may cause infertility, early aging, changes in major organs, weakened immune system, and dysfunctional insulin regulation. In some cases, GMOs have killed livestock. Children have a greater chance of becoming negatively affected by GMOs (LabelGMOs.org). Foods that are commonly genetically modified include canola, corn, soybeans, and zucchini. Many people do not realize that they are consuming these foods because they are not required to be labeled in the United States. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) believe that consuming genetically modified foods and drinks are not harmful, and labeling them would be too expensive. The FDA’s opinions on GMOs are accurate being that many of the workers were former executives of Monsanta, one of the largest GMO companies (New Strait Times).
